Art Basel’s flagship fair in Switzerland is set to welcome 291 galleries from 42 countries this June, marking a return to pre-pandemic scale, and introducing a new sector dedicated to cuttinge-edge contemporary works. Led by director Maike Cruse, the 55th edition will launch a new Premiere sector, showcasing recently created works by emerging and established artists.
The total number of exhibitors is slightly up from last edition’s 287, with 18 new galleries from Europe, Asia, and the Americas joining for the first time. The fairs exhibitor numbers have hovered under 290 since 2019, before the pandemic. As usual, it will run at the Messe Basel from June 19 to 22, with VIP previews on June 17 and 18.
Among the newcomers this year are London’s Arcadia Missa and François Ghebaly of Los Angeles, both of which will participate in the main and highly competitive Galleries sector alongside blue-chip stalwarts such as Pace, David Zwirner, and Thaddaeus Ropac. The fair also promoted five galleries that previously exhibited in the smaller Feature or Statements sectors to the main section. They include Beijing Commune from Beijing, London’s Emalin, Hunt Kastner from Prague, Paris-based Galerie Le Minotaure, and The Third Gallery Aya from Osaka.
Other outfits making their Basel debut include L.A.’s Anat Ebgi and Polka Galerie from Paris in the Feature sector, which focuses on art historical projects. Additionally, Galerie Oskar Weiss will participate for the first time alongside returning Galerie Mueller; the Swiss galleries will jointly present works by Klaudia Schifferle, one of Switzerland’s leading contemporary artists and the co-founder of the all-women punk band Kleenex. The collaboration continues a growing trend of galleries sharing booths at major art fairs.

The new Premiere sector, a platform dedicated to works created within the past five years, will feature 10 galleries with each gallery presenting up to three artists. Among them are London’s Edel Assanti and Kosaku Kanechika from Tokyo, both first-time exhibitors. Other participants include Chapter NY, showcasing Antonia Kuo’s multimedia photochemical paintings and Erin Jane Nelson’s ceramics, and Beijing’s Magician Space, which will present Liu Ding’s new work Survivors (2025), an immersive installation reflecting on survival amidst historical and contemporary traumas.
Statements, which spotlights emerging artists from around the world, will feature 18 solo booths. Eight of them are first time exhibitors, they include Munich’s Nir Altman, Artbeat from Tbilisi, Fanta-MLN in Milan, London’s Ginny on Frederick, Toronto’s Franz Kaka, Kayokoyuki from Tokyo, Eli Kerr from Monstreal, and Warsaw’s Gunia Nowik Gallery.
Meanwhile, German artist Katharina Grosse will be the star of Messeplatz, where Agnes Denes’ Honoring Wheatfield grew last year. Known for her brightly colored, site-specific installations, Grosse will create an immersive work outside the exhibition hall in a special project curated by Natalia Grabowska, curator at large of architecture and site-specific projects at the Serpentine Gallery in London. Stefanie Hessler, director of Swiss Institute in New York, will return to create another edition of Parcours sector, an exhibition of public art around the city of Basel.
“With an unmatched line-up of galleries, the introduction of exciting new sectors like Premiere, the return of Parcours, and a stunning immersive installation by Katharina Grosse, Art Basel continues to be a powerful platform for discovery and a driving force for cultural exchange, innovation, and artistic expression,” said Cruse, who took over direction of the fair in 2023. This will be the second edition of the fair under her leadership.
