TRENTON – Artworks Trenton announced plans for a mural at the Route 1/129 underpass as the first phase of the Trenton Artwalk project. The initiative aims to transform the pedestrian route connecting the Trenton Transit Center with downtown.
The non-profit visual art center will commission a permanent mural for the underpass’s north wall along Market Street. The project represents the beginning of efforts to create a more inviting passage for residents, commuters, and visitors.
The Trenton Transit Center serves Amtrak, New Jersey Transit, SEPTA, and the River Line light rail. Pedestrians currently face dark, unwelcoming conditions when walking through the Route 1/129 underpass toward downtown.
The complete Trenton Artwalk vision includes public art, wayfinding elements, traffic calming measures, and landscaping to improve the pedestrian experience. The underpass mural will reflect Trenton’s history and culture.
Artworks Trenton is seeking artist submissions from New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania through a call for Expressions of Interest. Artists are encouraged to incorporate local themes and involve Trenton’s youth and community in the creative process.
Artists shortlisted for the next phase will receive $1,500 stipends to develop detailed proposals for presentation to the Art Selection Committee and community members.
