CINCINNATI (CNN Newsource/WKRC) -It already caused a stir on social media when it sold for more than $100,000, and it’s poised to ignite a frenzy on the internet once more.
That’s right, a viral piece of art that shows a banana duct-taped to a wall is up for sale again. This time, it’s expected to fetch nearly $1.5 million when it hits the auction block.
It’s called “Comedian,” and in case you’re wondering, yes, it’s a real banana.
“In December 2019, Maurizio Cattelan’s Comedian captivated the world in its debut at Art Basel Miami Beach. Comprised of a banana fastened with duct tape to a wall, the artwork quickly erupted into a viral global sensation that left a lasting impact on the contemporary cultural consciousness. Its initial appearance drew record crowds, divided viewers and critics alike, and caused such pandemonium that it had to be removed from the premises before the end of the fair,”said Sotheby’s.
Sotheby’s, a worldwide auction house, said that it’s considered a piece of “conceptual artwork” and that the physical materials are replaced with every piece. That means that the winning bidder will get a roll of duct tape, a banana, and a certificate of authenticity. Of course, it will also come with official instructions on how to properly install the work.
It’s one of three editions that first sold five years ago at the Art Basel Miami Beach Fair. Two of those three were purchased by private collectors for $120,000. The third piece was bought at a “higher undisclosed sum” and was eventually donated to the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
The artist who created the works is Maurizio Cattelan, who’s known for creating satirical pieces that challenge pop culture.
The sale for this piece will take place at Sotheby’s New York headquarters on Nov. 20. If you would like to see the listing, click here.
