A new exhibition celebrating the Art Deco era has opened at the Garden Rooms at Tennants in Leyburn.
The exhibition coincides with the centenary of the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris, which launched the Art Deco style onto a global platform.
A spokesperson for the Garden Rooms said: “The beginning of the 20th century was a time of sweeping change and a new era called for a new style that would encapsulate the rapid onslaught of modernity and herald the beginning of a new age.
“This was the era of the motor car, the luxury ocean liner and the advent of air travel. Of jazz music, the emancipation of women and the glamour of Hollywood. In just a few years, both the world and art and design had changed beyond all recognition.
“Redolent of glamour, style and luxury, the Art Deco era shunned western art and design, bringing together global influences, bold geometric designs in the search for a radically new style.”
Organisers say the exhibition aims to give a taste of some of the defining influences, themes and makers of the era, featuring a private collection of ladies’ millinery, accessories and costume from the 1920s and 1930s, and a private collection of decorative arts and design.
The exhibition, which is free to enter, is open daily until May 4 (closed Easter Monday).
