WARNING: Contains Potential Spoilers for ABSOLUTE WONDER WOMAN #1!
I’ve been cosplaying Wonder Woman for over three years now, always sticking to the classic look with the gladiator skirt and double W bustier—my go-to look. But with the recent in-story reveal of Absolute Wonder Woman’s costume, there’s no way I can resist recreating what might just be one of Diana’s most badass looks yet.
…Absolute Wonder Woman uses the blood of her fallen enemies as war paint around her eyes…
After reading Absolute Wonder Woman #1 by Kelly Thompson, Hayden Sherman, Jordie Bellaire, and Becca Carey, I’m already convinced it will be one of my all-time favorite Wonder Woman stories. This first issue reimagines Diana of Themyscira in a way that feels fresh, exciting, and downright badass.
While I’m completely obsessed with this new Wonder Woman’s origin story—being raised in Hell as the daughter of Circe—it’s her costume that’s really sparked my inspiration. I’ve already started gathering supplies to recreate it, and while I might not finish in time for Halloween, I can’t wait to debut it at my next Comic Con.
The In-Narrative Debut of Absolute Wonder Woman’s Costume Reveals New Design Details
Diana Uses the Blood of Her Enemies as War Paint
Absolute Wonder Woman’s design has been teased for months through variant covers for the series’ upcoming issues, but seeing the costume in action through Sherman’s art and Bellaire’s coloring has given me a whole new appreciation for the it. Like the variant covers, this in-story reveal showcases the hardcore red, black, and silver color scheme that defines the outfit. The opening pages show Diana fully armored, wearing her red bodysuit and sharp-edged black armor, topped off with a silver double “W” on her chest. The look is completed by her exaggeratedly large, completely badass great sword.
What really stood out in this in-narrative debut are the details that weren’t shown in the variant covers—most notably, her glowing red-eyed black helm. This is the first time that fans get to see the Princess of Hell fully donning her black-spiked, red-feathered helm in FULL color. Additionally, when Diana removes the helm, she uses the blood of her fallen enemies as war paint around her eyes. I absolutely love details like this. With the war paint and black lipstick, I get to explore a side of cosplay I don’t usually experience with Wonder Woman, who is typically bare-faced—making these new makeup-based elements even more exciting to recreate.

I Can’t-Wait to Recreate Wonder Woman’s Oxblood-Red Sleeve Tattoo
Absolute Diana’s Tattoos Are One of My Favorite Parts of Her Design
While the opening pages show Diana fully armored, I’m especially drawn to the later pages of the comic that highlight one of my favorite design elements—Absolute Wonder Woman’s oxblood red tattoos. The moment I saw these tattoos showcased in the cover art for the DC ALL IN special, I was immediately smitten. This is such a badass way to distinguish this Diana’s character design from the original. I particularly love that the arm sleeve design has a tribal vibe that complements Wonder Woman’s Wild Isle origins and her witch status perfectly.
Overall, Absolute Wonder Woman #1 has given fans the best view of Diana’s new look, showing her design in action and from various angles—costume, tattoos, and makeup—making it the ideal blueprint for cosplayers like me. I plan to stick as close to the original design as possible, though I’ll likely move Diana’s sleeve tattoo to my left arm since I’m right-handed, as the angle of the paint job will already be tricky enough. But aside from this small tweak, I want to capture every detail of the look, as there isn’t a single thing about it I don’t love.

My Cosplay Creation Game Plan (What Materials Will I Be Using?)
616 Comics Virgin Variant by Ivan Talavera for Absolute Wonder Woman #1
For my costume creation game plan, I intend to use EVA foam for the black armor while crafting the red bodysuit with lightweight fabric to keep the costume flexible, comfortable, and as lightweight as possible. Similarly, I’ll use EVA foam to create Diana’s giant sword, which will be my first time making a weapon for any cosplay, so I’ll likely need to do a bit more research for this part of the process. I’m also considering forgoing the helm; while it’s undeniably badass, I want to showcase Diana’s in-narrative war paint and black lipstick. Overall, I can’t wait to see all the pieces of this Absolute Wonder Woman cosplay come together.

Wonder Woman is the superhero identity of Diana, Princess of the Amazons. Created on the island of Themyscira, Wonder Woman is a super-powered demi-goddess with extreme physical strength who utilizes magical gifts (like her famous Lasso of Truth) to defeat her foes. As mighty as her fellow heroes Superman and the Justice League, Wonder Woman is unmatched in her compassion and virtue.
