HIGH POINT — The Art Gallery at Congdon Yards has a new exhibition opening this week that celebrates the region’s modernist spirit by showcasing furniture, architecture, art and design by both mid-century craftsmen and contemporary artists.
“NC MOD: Mid-Century Design & North Carolina’s Modern Legacy” will open Friday and remain on view through Oct. 30. An opening reception will be held today from 5 to 7 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.
There are two special talks scheduled to accompany the exhibition:
* On Oct. 2 at 5:30 p.m., Phil Miller will present “The History of Thayer Coggin & Milo Baughman.”
* On Oct. 16 at 5:30 p.m., Peter Freeman will present “Modernism, NC State & Local Legacy.”
Pre-register for either talk by emailing info@tagart.org.
Tracing the evolution of modernism across North Carolina and the Piedmont, “NC MOD” highlights the ways architects and designers translated modern principles across disciplines, transforming homes, workplaces and everyday objects. This ambitious exhibition examines how North Carolina emerged as a vital hub for modern design and one of the most significant centers of modern architecture in the nation.
“We were so lucky to be able to partner with AIA Piedmont, Thayer Coggin, Freeman Kennett, and many more local organizations to develop this exhibit,” said curator Kathryn Drum. “Having community involvement has allowed us to present a fascinating local story. There is something for everyone at this exhibit, whether you are interested in art, architecture, furniture, interior design, or history.”
The Art Gallery at Congdon Yards is at 400 W. English Road, Suite 151.
