Discover Newmarket, a not-for-profit tourism organisation, has teamed up with Newmarket Town Council and Love Newmarket Business Improvement District (BID) to create a new trail in the town.
The trail will feature eight wooden sculptures, and people are being invited to enter a competition to design three of these.
The sculptures will be four-foot, chess-themed pieces, designed by Neith Art & Sculpture, and will be placed around Newmarket.

“It’s a chance for people to tell their own stories and how these are inextricably linked to the heritage and culture of our wonderful racing town.”
Natalie Robinson, manager of Love Newmarket BID, said: “We are always looking at novel ways to attract visitors to the town centre and we anticipate this exciting, artistic trail to be of great interest.”
The competition welcomes participants of all ages and artistic backgrounds, inviting them to submit original designs that express their personal story through motifs on a ‘Pawn’ chess piece.
Kim Neith Thompson from Neith Art & Sculpture (Image: Supplied) Councillor Phillipa Winters, mayor of Newmarket, added: “Newmarket Town Council is always keen to support initiatives which enhance our town and involve community engagement.
“We are looking forward to welcoming visitors and residents alike, who will learn about our history through this novel and innovative trail.”
The winning designs will be carved in wood during a live event that will launch the new town trail on July 19, 2025.
Entries must be submitted by June 16, 2025, with winners to be announced on June 20, 2025.
Details of how to enter can be found on the Discover Newmarket website.
