Artistic Archives
Paintings and artefacts procured by the homeowner, Mrs. Mathur, an architect by education and an aesthete, pepper the artistic landscape of the home. The sofa set in the living room flaunts vibrant texiles she sourced from Nagaland, adding bursts of colour and personality. And years ago, the couple had purchased several tonnes of timber from the structural member of an old, demolished wada. This wada wood now finds expression in the handmade furniture of this home, completing the material’s life cycle. “Many furniture pieces are works of art in themselves, and have been crafted with care by Shaban Lakkadwala, a master craftsman from Mumbai, whose attention to detail and finesse were awe-inspiring. Mrs Mathur had suggested that we get some pieces crafted from him, to further add a layer of artistry to the home,” recalls Ninada.
A unique project in the designers’ oeuvre, this Pune home holds a special place in their heart. “This project made us juggle multiple roles—heavy-duty civil work alongside planning of the finer details and art procurement, giving us a brilliant opportunity to immerse ourselves in all facets of design,” reminisces Komal. Ninada adds, “Mrs Mathur, being an architect herself, was completely in sync with our creative processes and that made the entire journey all the more enjoyable.” By the end of the project, the two separate spaces meld together seamlessly as a cohesive whole, striking a delicate balance between art and design.
