A series of decorative bollards now installed in downtown Nanaimo will stand in tribute to the artistic legacy of a late Snuneymuxw master carver.
According to a release by the City of Nanaimo, the bollards feature artwork by Joel Good of Ay Lelum – The Good House of Design, who died last year. The bollards are part of ongoing upgrades to Commercial Street, and are intended to enhance downtown through art and urban design.
“Good was a world-renowned Snuneymuxw master carver and artist who played a critical role in the Coast Salish art revitalization movement,” noted the release. “The designs bring strength, beauty and storytelling to the streetscape – enriching the area’s cultural and visual identity.”
The new traffic barriers feature the Good family Steelikim, or sea serpent, in traditional Coast Salish style, coiling down the length of each bollard.
“Joel Good’s artistry has left a profound mark on Nanaimo. These beautifully designed bollards not only honour his legacy but weave Snuneymuxw culture into the heart of our city. They are a meaningful reminder of the stories and traditions that shape our community and enrich our shared spaces,” said Chief Mike Wyse of Snuneymuxw First Nation.
