INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Central Indiana artists have been invited to apply for the 2026 Welcome Race Fans art project

Applications are due by Oct. 26.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) and Indy Arts Council are seeking five artists to create artworks that will welcome visitors during the Month of May, celebrating the Indianapolis 500.

The Welcome Race Fans project began in 2016, initially commissioning 33 artworks from 33 artists to commemorate the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500. Since then, five new artists have been selected each year, contributing to a growing collection that now includes nearly 80 artists.

Artists were encouraged to express what “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” means to Indianapolis through their unique artistic styles, whether through vibrant colors, bold strokes, or digital media. Both two- and three-dimensional artworks will be considered for the project, allowing artists to explore various mediums.

The Indianapolis 500 has been scheduled for May 24.

President J. Douglas Boles of IMS and IndyCar, said in a statement in a news release, “The Welcome Race Fans art is one of the first things visitors to the city of Indianapolis see during the Month of May. or the last 10 years, the Welcome Race Fans pieces have added to the excitement and anticipation of May.”
