With its stated banner of “cultivate,” Edmonton Design Week kicks off Tuesday with dozens of events, tours, receptions, and open houses, city-wide, hosted by non-profit society Media Architecture Design Edmonton (MADE).

Boldly living up to the often-used “explore Edmonton” hashtag, this open gathering of observers and thinkers is a forum of municipal self-reflection, conversation, and even occasional pride in the form of the classic, “we love this place, and here are our notes.”

Reads the mandate: “Our goal is to allow you to become part of the design process and shape your own future with design through ideation and creation,” the “you” really meaning you.

Kicking off with The Citadel and the City tour and panel at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at said venue, similar-minded events include David Murray and Shafraaz Kaba giving the spicy Capital Modern Downtown Building Tour starting at City Hall 5 p.m. that day.

Then, the Alberta Labour History Institute leads the Walking Tour of Working Class Heritage Buildings of Downtown Edmonton at 10 a.m. starting at Stanley A. Milner Library next Thursday, with a repeat at 10 a.m. Sun., Oct. 20.

Another should-see: Blatchford Air Traffic Control Tower Tour and Reception 4 p.m Sat. Oct. 19.

Jumping on a hot button issue, local firm DIALOG is hosting the discussion Pasturizing the RAM: When Is a Building Truly at the End of Its Useful Life? at their space at 10237 104 St. That’s 2:30 p.m. Thurs., Oct. 17.

Speaking of controversial buttons, AI + Design: Friend or Foe? happens at 9 a.m. at The Pendennis at 9660 Jasper Ave.

It’s not all about the macro, mind you, as Tralynn Ganter’s noon and 2:30 p.m. Sat. Oct. 19 Coiled Basket Workshops at Alberta Craft Gallery (10186 106 St.) demonstrate while Bay 1 Gallery (9540 62 Ave.) hopes you to pop by the reception for abstract artist Jim MacGregor’s solo show Liminal at 7 that same night.

There’s even a film component as the Art Gallery of Alberta screens the director’s cut of landscape architect Claude Cormier’s Oral History, introduced by the city’s official architect, Carol Belanger. That’s 1 p.m., Oct. 20.

VIP passes are already sold out, but individual tickets to the dozens of events (including the parties) and full, juicy explanations of them all are at edmontondesignweek.com — anyone with curiosity is welcome!
