Marvel just revealed one of the best Hulk images of all time, as the Jade Giant heads into a team-up with Peter Parker’s Spider-Man.
Not only is this art that every Hulk fan has to see, but it encapsulates the story of Hulk’s latest appearance, which is introducing a fascinating new wrinkle to the Hulk/Banner rivalry.
See the new art below, as well as finding out more about what it means for Hulk and Spider-Man’s new mission to finally free the troubled scientist from his monstrous other half.
Hulk Haunts Bruce Banner in Jaw-Dropping Art from R.B. Silva
Marvel recently announced the upcoming series Spider-Man/Hulk: Fire and Brimstone, from Kevin Smith, Andy McElfresh and R.B. Silva. Along with info on the series, Marvel presents both the issue’s cover and some uncolored, unlettered interior art (above and below.) One image, above, stands out as one of the greatest depictions of Hulk of all time.
The image shows Bruce Banner, eyes glowing, looking back at the reader, while Hulk’s form hangs around him like a ghost. Silva has used Hulk’s classic, Frankenstein-esque design with a heavy brow and bowlcut hair, emphasizing his inhuman nature. The sense of scale is perfect, leaning into Hulk’s towering size and a gigantic hand that seems to hold Banner in its grasp.
While Marvel has revealed the pencils for this image, fans can still look forward to the final version – hopefully with the knockout colors of frequent Silva collaborator David Curiel.
Despite the contrast in scale between the two characters, their poses and glowing eyes connect them as inherently linked, almost as if Hulk is haunting Bruce… which is exactly the premise of the new series.
What Hulk and Spider-Man’s New Series Is About
Spider-Man/Hulk: Fire and Brimstone will see Bruce Banner strike on a new way to try and rid himself of the Hulk, seeking out an exorcism with Spider-Man and Daredevil’s help. It’s an unusual spiritual spin on Banner’s usual desire to free himself from the Jade Giant, but given his desperation, it makes sense he’d try everything.
The new series kicks off with the villainous Mole Man unleashing a new team of villains who all have ‘man’ in their name – Silva’s art shows Sandman, Stilt-Man, Man-Bull, Plantman and more running amok in Central Park. Spider-Man shows up to complete the theme, only for the Incredible Hulk to unexpectedly crash the party.
The team-up will involve Spider-Man in Bruce Banner’s exorcism plans, with Marvel promising an “ultra-accessible and pun-filled five issue limited series.” Smith tells Marvel:
I’ve played with Peter Parker and swung with Spider-Man before but this is the first time I’m having Hulk issues! Andy and I are dropping two of Marvel’s most well-known scientists into a spiritual story of Biblical proportions as we exorcise the Incredible Hulk – and I’m not talking cross-fit!
Marvel Is Investing in Accessible Series for Casual Comic Fans
Spider-Man/Hulk: Fire and Brimstone is the latest of Marvel’s new miniseries aimed at casual comic fans. Series like Wolverine: Revenge and Spider-Man: Long Way Home combine iconic characters to tell stories where no prior context is required to enjoy the story.
However, Marvel has also managed to hook longtime fans thanks to the sheer level of talent on the creative teams, uniting top-flight creators like Jonathan Hickman, Adam Kubert and Greg Capullo. Smith and Silva is another blockbuster combination.
These are the types of comics that hardcore fans have been insisting Marvel should do for years – short, standalone, timeless stories starring the publisher’s biggest heroes. Hopefully, Marvel’s gambit will be successful in reaching new readers while offering longtime fans an all-star creative team.
Spider-Man and the Hulk’s next adventure will see Bruce Banner try to exorcise himself from the Incredible Hulk, with jaw-dropping art already a certainty.
