A group art exhibition titled ‘Women in Art’ concluded on Wednesday at Abinta Gallery of Fine Arts in the capital made a foray into diverse mediums, exploring the many shades of women’s life and womanhood.

Organised by the gallery, the show features selected works of 49 local female artists, shedding light on the experiences, identities, emotions, social realities and many other aspects of their life and perspectives.

The pieces were selected by a jury board comprising renowned artists Farida Zaman and Kanak Chapa Chakma, presenting the works of both seasoned artists and those emerging—Ivy Zaman, Kuhu Plamondon, Fareha Zeba, Gulshan Hossain, Asmita Alam Shammy, Farzana Bobby, Ruposhree Hajong, Salma Zakia Bristy, Monira Begum Lipe, Shakila Khan Chayan, Sigma Haque Angkan, Namirah Farzana and Tulsi Rani Das among them.

While acrylic on canvas appeared as a major medium for the works presented, diverse other media were also used—mixed media, terracotta engravings, woodcut, etching, textile art being some of them—all intensely weaving the stories of women, intertwining the womanhood and creative imagination of the artists.

‘The exhibition wanted to create a strong and inclusive platform for female artists, enabling them to present their creative work to a wider audience and gain the opportunity to participate more actively in artistic practice,’ said chairperson of the gallery Nilu Rowshon Murshed.

The 12-day exhibition was inaugurated on May 9.
